How to replace a marquee light ballast:
Every once in a while we get a game in that will destroy new marquee bulbs and starters. Sometimes, it also will blow the main fuse in the cabinet.
If you put a new bulb and starter into a game and the light flashes on power up, the cause is a bad ballast.
| Step 1: Throw away the bulb and starter. The bad ballast just destroyed them. |
Step 2: Remove the light fixture from the game and open it up. Note the charred enclosure and the tar-like substance on the ballast. |
| Step 3: Buy a replacement Ballast. These are available mail order via Bob Roberts or at your local Home Depot. We bought a pile of these when HQ was going out of business. |
| Step 4: Remove the screws or bolts holding the
ballast in place. Clip ONE of the wires going to the ballast, near the ballast. The new ballast may or may not have wires as long as the ones in the light fixture. So, that is why we suggest cutting them closest to the old ballast. |
| Step 5: Connect the wire you just clipped to the
wire from the same position on the new ballast. Clip the other wire from the old ballast near the ballast. |
| Step 6: Solder & Crimp on both sets of
wires. Replace the screws or bolts to hold the new ballast in place. Push the wires down into the fixture so they won't get cut. |
| Step 7: Reassemble the outside cover of the
fixture. Replace the starter and lamp. |
| Step 8: Test the next fixture before closing up
the game. If the main fuse blows or circuit breaker pops, you may have wired something wrong. Check your work. If the main fuse blows, chances are you connected two sides of AC directly together. |
